What alternative medicine area should i choose for my family's health?

Dana Russian: Science. Real, proven medical science. Nothing else will actually help you or your family. Doing anything else is putting your family's health at risk in case of an emergency.

Melina Minneweather: You are so right. With so many alternative medical treatments, it can be overwhelming to decide what is best for you and your family. I started switching over to alternative practices about 24 years ago. There is now so much good information available in print and on line. When I worked in the Whole Body Department at Whole Foods, I saw one of their best reference books, which I purchased for myself, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis and James Balch and it has become my alternative medicine bible which joins numerous other books in my alternative medicine library. I would also recommend a naturopathic doctor as naturopathy incorporates many different treatments including: vitamin/supplements, herbs, homeopathy, acupuncture, etc.and strives to ! get to the root of a persons ailment/condition instead of just treating the symptom. I started a blog about treating my own many conditions/ailments with natural treatments and remedies, http://www.healthymenaturally.com and have so much more to add. Hope this has been helpful and congratulations on choosing to seek out alternative medicine for your family....Show more

Raymon Fiene: No alternative medicine has been proven to actually work. That's why it's called "alternative" medicine. Medicine that works is just called medicine. Herbs are crude drugs which suffer from seasonal variation, they're non-standardized, not regulated or controlled, not well studied, safety risks and side effects are mostly unknown. They are handed out by people with little or no medical training.Naturopaths believe in all sorts of nonsense like magic healing energies, cosmic life forces, the dreaded toxins, etc. They may be able to guide you nutritionally, but they are anti-science based ! medicine, anti-vaccination, do no proper research and are not ! medically qualified to treat anything beyond self-limiting conditions.Homeopathy is absurd rubbish. Homeopathic remedies contain no active ingredients - they dilute every last molecule of some silly ingredient away in water and think the remaining water retains the "vibrations" of the original ingredient. They think the more you dilute the substance, the more potent the remedy is. No homeopathic remedy has ever been proven to work beyond placebo effects, ever. There has been hundreds of studies in over two hundred years, but still no good evidence of efficacy. So everything you've mentioned is pretty much quackery, it all relies on placebo and other such effects - it may be of mental help for the worried-well but that's about it. I'd never put the health of my family into the hands of anything other than the best science has to offer.Take a listen to this awesome poem by Tim Minchin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0W7Jbc_Vhw

Jerald Florence: Naturopathy is a com! bination of Orthomolecular medicine (nutrition based) which includes supplementation with natural health products, herbals, Homeopathy and Acupuncture/TCM. It's multidisciplinary, so it's probably your best bet. It also focusses on preventive health care. Naturopaths also study pharmacy, so can advise you if a referral to a family physician for some issue is advisable. If there's a natural alternative to a drug and you're taking one they'll know how to wean you off it if that's what you want or it's causing more problems than it's worth. My 80 year old mother is taking NO drugs. She sees a Naturopath twice a year. My brother's 80 year old mother-in-law, after hearing of this success finally agreed to see one -- it's the first time in 30 years the chronic swelling in her hands has disappeared. I think it's very important that people take charge of their own health. Drugs should be the last resort, not the first. It's too bad that too many people don't investigate their option! s before making decisions....Show more

Darcie Peraha: None of the! things you list treat actual conditions that do not otherwise resolve themselves. Eat all the fruits and vegetables you like, season them with herbs even (I have a garden full of them myself) but don't rely on superstition and folk lore as a "system of medicine".Folklore gave us treating warts by wearing a frog around the neck in a red flannel sack. You want better for your family....Show more
