My answer is yes as long as your laptop has a usb 2.0 port is you are planning to use an external optical drive. If you are talking about installing an internal drive in your laptop the price is usually a little higher sometimes much higher depending on the drive type and laptop model so check prices and add that to the total cost of purchase before making your buying decision. A seemingly bargain of a deal can turn expensive if you take buying an internal drive into consideration. You can save a lot of money by buying a use or recertified internal drive. External is the way to go to save money and is easiest to install.However! carrying around an optical drive can be more annoying and more trouble than you think. Especially if you use the drive a lot to install programs or burn discs or watch movies.
