Is anorexia nervosa really a disease?

Sheldon Lally: There are other reasons behind anorexia though. It may not be voluntary like in my case. I had mouth surgery and teeth removed to the point where I wouldn't eat because of the pain. Then, even after the stitches and cuts cleared up I had lost my appetite and will to eat until I had to see a psychiatrist and doctor. Im sure there are other cases which would cause someone to develop anorexia, it's not always voluntary.

Sherrill Botting: Most of the time, people with any mental disorder are born with it, or have had trauma happen to them that cause their thinking/feelings to be different. Anorexia nervosa is no different. Yes, you choose not to eat, but there's more to it than that. You don't choose to have whatever trauma happened to you, or be born with those feelings. So yes, it is a disease just like all mental illnesses....Show more

Woodrow Neyman: Anorexia itself is an eating disorder from my understanding but anorexia nervosa is a mental dis! order.

Son Ahlers: It is a disease. It's not that we (I'm anorexic) choose not to eat, it's a combanation of things. It's the fear of getting fat, it's the body dismorhpia and the intense selfloathing triggered from whithin. If someone is scared of lifts for example, they do not chose to be scared, something has triggered them to be, much like eating disorders, we fear getting fat though. There is such thing as proanas though who choose to live a lifestyle as an anorexic person, but that's not a disease, although the should get help....Show more

Darrin Hixenbaugh: It can and can't be. Anorexia is a nervous loss if appetite and can be triggered from sever trauma or stress.

Maynard Reevers: anorexia is a mental disease were no mattter how skinny the person in their mind their always fat ugly and worthless
