Wilbert Shellgren: To expand on the other post, the American economy has changed from an industrial labor based economy to a service and technology based economy. Most of these career fields require some sort of extra education and/or specialized training. Previously, many people were able to find blue-collar jobs that did not require any formal secondary education, yet provided good pay and benefits. Also, the general consensus is that a college degree says that a person has put forth the effort to improve themselves and stick to it long enough to complete a long and tedious program. It holds a certain degree of respect, and it is assumed that you actually learned a little bit along the way. These people are the ones who are more likely to recognize and catch the breaks. Also, to truly understand society, how it works, why people do what they do, you have to be educated. Society is a product of all sorts of influences: history, economics, politics, biology, ethics, la! w, etc. If you are uneducated (by that I mean either formally educated or you teach yourself) you can never really truly understand society....Show more
