Preschool Naptime....?

Bethanie Menden: You should definitely question the school or find a better one. I have two children and they always take a 2 hour nap, from 12:30 to 2:30 PM. Kids shouldn't be napping for that long!

Mildred Pombo: No, that is not right. Most places do 1 hour nap or rest time and then they wake them up. I would say something about that to them.

Hermina Ketring: That's out of line. An hour and a half to 2 hours is pretty standard, depending on the age of the kids. Also, kids who wake up early should not be expected to do nothing. They could be reading or doing quiet activities on their mats. Have a chat with the Director, who may not be aware of what is happening.

Fritz Hawkey: Yeah... I'd definitely ask about it. They should be making reasonable accomodations for those children who wake up after they have slept. Preschools are required to have a certain amount of time "zoned", if you will, for napping, but they should also be making accomodations for t! hose who wake early or do not nap. This means, an area where these kids can go to do quiet activities as they wake, like coloring, puzzles, or reading books. Often, in centers with 12:1 ratios, naprooms are allowed to have as many as 24 in a room, with one staff during nap (if all children are asleep). As soon as one child wakes, the ratio must go back to 12:1, and another staff must be present. In good centers, the ratio is much smaller, and children have another room to go to after they wake to play. I'd ask what their policies are on this... you certainly do not want your child wasting time rolling on the floor if he is not tired. If he's awake, they should be allowing him to do something else, or he's going to become a behavior issue. Expecting 3-5 year olds to nap for 3 1/2 hours is ludicrous, and they are just setting themselves up for behavior problems. What is their staffing during nap time? Many centers use this time for staff to take their lunches, and do! prep work, etc.- but obviously this setup they have now is no! t working, and they need to come up with an alternative. The thing is- how proactive are you? If you don't say something, nothing will change in the way things are being done. So, it really is up to you to enact change that is good for your child (as well as for all the others who are laying there wide awake). Research your state's standards (Licensing requirements) on naptime. Look up your state Dept. of Education website and look under Licensing of Daycare Centers (or something similar). It will spell out the exact requirements that your center has to abide by (length of naptime, ratios in the room, children that can be in the room, what to do after nap). Then, print the page from the Licensing webpage and take it with you to show that you know how to research requirements they must be accountable for, and that you know what you are talking about. You'll have concrete evidence to back up what methods you are questioning....Show more

Ester Bryand: HELLOIf it ! was ME, i would get someone to come into the house and watch him,11:30 til 3 pm WHAT KIND OF SH!-t is thatMOM do me a favor, and get a new sitter, even if the baby sitter has the TV going all day long, its gotta be better than laying still on a MAT for goodness sakes, At least TV would entertain him,3-4 year olds, MINE don't nap at all after 3 years OLD,I would much rather sleep throught the night,Please get someone else, to come to your home, or drop him off at a home daycare sitter,at least he will play with friends, unbelieveable,...Show more

Christiane Cattano: Talk to them if they do not comply change preschools.

Stormy Beliard: A one hour nap is the norm.. anything longer and i'd be pitching a fit!! my son wont hardly lay down for an hour.. let alone 3 and ahalf hours. i think this goes against daycare policy... i dont think you can just put kids to bed for that long. look into laws in your state. and talk to the daycare manager. tell them you're not happ! y with your son being put to sleep for that long....Show more

Bla! ir Abdi: Yes question the school. I have worked in daycare settings and 1 hour is usually the most for a naptime. It sounds like they just don't want take care or nurture the children.

Dorinda Metzer: Wow! That's a huge nap! When I worked in a day care, we put the kids down from 12:30 -2:00 pm. Most the kids would wake up on their own around 2:00. I wouldn't be surprised if there are many more children in that day care that are not sleeping well at night. Seems like that day care may not want to have to prepare lesson plans for the afternoon. Seems to me that at that age, they would want to lessent he naps to about an hour so that the kids are more prepared for school where there is no nap. Hope this helps!Missy...Show more

Walter Scordino: Well to me this seems a bit old for a nap my pre schoolers are 2 yrs old and we put them down at 1230 and get them up at 2pm but if they wake up inbetween and want to get up they are allowed to look at books or have a quiet! activity out.Every child is an individual and in the uk ofsted would not approve of this so you should complain.

Lorelei Lilburn: i would be ticked and be taking him out of there asap

Flor Lizardi: Pull him out. I've worked at a daycare for 7 years now. There is no reason for them to be sleeping/made to lay there for that long. Don't give them a chance, they're not going to change. Just get him out of there. A director that lets them do that anyway shows she doesn't care herself. Of course the teachers want them to sleep or stay on their mats that long... that way they don't have to deal with them. Some of the teachers do the same at my daycare, but not for that long. If I were you I'd talk to the director, call licensing, and find another center. I'm so happy you were able to pick up on that... most parents think they know what is going on with their child... but honestly, you have no idea. I don't care how nice the people are, or how clean your cente! r is... unless you sit down and watch a video of the day, you never rea! lly know the truth....Show more

Zulema Baccam: YES! Question the school, my daughter can nap for hours if I let her (which I do at times), but while she is at school she only gets about an hour of nap. They should have more activity. 11:30-3 is a long time, imagine everythign you are doing between those hours, and your son is sleeping, while you are paying money... get my drift?Ask is it normal procedure and why they do it. If you don't like it, be sure to speak with the director.BTW - I think it's pretty cool that you have webcams!...Show more

Jerrod Guilfoil: That's messed up. You can report them for that. 11:30 to 3 is was too long to keep a child down for nap...unless they need the sleep, which in this case seems unnecessary.

Jannette Kotz: At 3.5 - 4 they barely need a nap anymore - I can see an hour of quiet time, but 3 hours? That's bull. Time to either talk to them or find another preschool.

Toby Caswell: yeah definately. that's way to l! ong. it may be helping her job but not yours

Jacques Teri: The preschool teacher is a moron. Naptime is not supposed to be more than an hour- and hour and a half. The teacher is making them lay there for a long time so she can have some alone time. She is not earning her money.A good teacher will think of cool activities for the children to do instead of making them lay down for almost 4 hours. She should be "earning" her money the right way by allowing the kids to do games, colouring, singing, etc, etc.. Not sleeping.Report her, please! Cheers...Show more

Tijuana Tatsak: I would find a new preschool. 3 1/2 hours is much too long for a 3 or 4 year old. My 2 year old usually sleeps from 1 to 3.

Esteban Faggett: Jeezz that's not right. My son is in preschool too and his naps are from 12:00 to 12:30. He goes to preschool from 8 to 2 pm. That seems like an awfully long time. I used to work at a day care and we would only make our 2 yrs old take no longer than! a 2 hour nap.

Ardell Luy: i work at a daycare & I agree its redi! culous I would change it if i could but, I'm only the snack/house keeper lady so... but they cant change it either its what they are told to do according to the state regulations. Its stupid I know. Why that long??!

Raul Tllo: many times, noticeably if it truly is a huge daycare/preschool, the naptime will be needed. I used to paintings at a daycare with naptime many times round 12:00 - 3:00, as a rule because some youngsters fell asleep directly and others would not bypass to sleep previous due. yet, we also ought to awaken early if all/countless the toddlers were conscious or some thing else. yet, we would not make the toddlers sleep, many times they could lay there and we had one or 2 who, actually, in no way slept. at your son's age, he would or ought to no longer nevertheless "go with" a nap. in reality, it really is in simple terms will he bypass to sleep or no longer? he should not be compelled to sleep, likely in simple terms lay down for a lengthy time perio! d and be quiet, and some preschools enable the toddlers "examine" a e book durring naptime, too...Show more

Dick Ovdenk: In my opinion 1 1/2-2 hours is Tops. In my book. But 3 hours. That's just absurd.

Gus Leiby: You should definitely bring up your concerns to the school's director. That amount of time for nap is absurd. Two hours should be the max required time.

Freeman Rutkin: Well, before I had my daughter I was a 3's teacher. And that was not my only job as a preschool provider, I worked at 2 different center, different companies and the both of them were the same. Lunch came around 11:30, we'd wash hands and brush teeth then set everything up for naptime. They would be on the cots between 12 and 12:30 depending on how long it took to eat and do everything esle. Then naptime was until 3pm. If the kids woke up before that, we had boxes with quiet activities for the kids to do while they were on the cots, and books. But they had to stay on the cots and n! ot disturb any of the other kids while they were sleeping. Both centers! I worked at did it this way. It is totally normal for naptime to be that long. But if they wake up they should have a choice of coloring or reading or something until it's time for everyone to get up....Show more

Oscar Waddups: well, you must talk to the teacher or principal of your child.. The teacher of your child is so lazy. she's earning money without any effort. I have encountered that when I was in elementary.. my teacher just wants us to sleep or have a freetime, it's almost everyday! I can't learn anything form him, then he'll give quizes that are so hard! I told that to my mom, and she talked to the principal. The principal told my mom that it is not normal to have a teacher that is always giving freetimes and naptimes every period! well, if I were you, I will talk to the principal of their school. It's not normal to make the kids sleep for 3 1/2 hours and its bad for children to sleep at 11pm, because that's almost midnight. well, that's only my opinion.. Th! anks for reading! ^_^...Show more

Gaylord Barragan: I think that 3 1/2 hours of naptime is a little excessive. I would definately say something to the school especially if he's not going to bed till 11:00 at night.
